WMA stands for Windows Media Audio. It is owned by Microsoft and is part of Microsoft's Windows Media technology. Independent testing has shown that the sound quality of a WMA file matches that of an MP3 file, at half the bit rate (i.e., half the file size). WMA is a downloadable format, and along with Microsoft's Advanced Streaming Format (ASF), it can be streamed to listeners. The WMA code includes optional copyright protection, allowing the owner to restrict the use of protected material.
WMA is a compressed audio file format.
It was developed as competition to the MP3 format.
WMA files have the extensions .wma and .asf. The suffix .wma is strictly used for audio files.
