Digital Speech Standard (DSS)

Overview

• DSS is a proprietary compressed digital audio format.
• It was developed by the International Voice Association, a co-operative venture by Olympus, Philips, and Grundig.
• This file format provides basic functions like recording, playing, rewinding, etc.
• It can record in either insert or overwrite mode.

How it works

• The technology used is similar to the audio format MP3.
• It compresses the audio without harming its quality.
• The audio quality is almost the same as the uncompressed original audio.
• DSS format can not be directly converted to MP3. You need to convert DSS format to WAV, and then use conventional software to convert the WAV file to an MP3 file.
